Marjorie Emerson's Sugar Cookies
1 1/2 cups of sugar
1 1/2 cups butter or margerine softened
2 eggs
2 tablespoons vanilla
4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Combine sugar and butter. Beat until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. Stir together dry ingredients, add gradually to creamed mixture until completely blended. Chill for 30 minutes. On a lightly floured surfece roll dough to 1/2" thickness. Cut with holiday or regular cutters dipped in flour. Uncooked cookies can be dipped in sugar sprinkles before baking for easy decorating.

Bake at 350 degrees 10 - 12 minutes on ungreased baking sheet. Cool and frost if desired.
